Her inspiration into possible new roles for a designer are very interesting, especially as we move away from attaching our title to the object we design (i.e. service designer as a designer of services). Source Opportunity CostOpportunity Cost means looking at the potential gain from alternatives that you haven't chosen. (e.g. "If the design team works on our internal AI tooling for 6 weeks, what revenue-generating work are they not doing?") Why does it matter? Because we often only weigh the value of the decisions in front of us. If we delay a project, the opportunity cost goes up because we hold human labor captive. We won't be able to work on projects B,C, or E until we project A. And that is a real cost. In the real world, it's very applicable to designers who stick around at jobs they hate, when they could be growing in other positions. It's Giving..."It's Giving..." is a free tool that watches a Zoom call for certain faces, and adds a matching meme to the video. It uses a virtual camera, and it's available for free on Github! Basic Strategic Foresight Prompt Last night in my talk, I mentioned that you could use AI to help you forecast like a futurist, but I didn't have time to show you an example. Try this prompt to get a feel for the type of forecasting you might do if you were a strategic foresight analyst. You are helping me do strategic foresight about [MY PRODUCT / MARKET].
Do not predict. Work in stages and stop after each one for my input.
STAGE 1 — SIGNALS
List 8 signals: things that have already happened in the last 18 months that hint at change here. Each one needs a date and a source. No trends, no generalisations. Only observable events.
Flag any you are unsure about rather than guessing.
STAGE 2 — SPLIT
Sort the forces behind those signals into two lists:
NEAR-CERTAIN (will happen regardless, e.g. installed base, demographics,regulation already passed)
GENUINELY UNCERTAIN (could resolve either way in 3 years)
Then pick the two uncertainties with the highest impact and explain why.
STAGE 3 — FOUR FUTURES
Build a 2x2 from those two uncertainties. For each quadrant give me: a name, one paragraph describing an ordinary Tuesday for our customer in that world, and what it would mean for our product.
Make them genuinely different. If two quadrants feel similar, redo it.
STAGE 4 — THE ARTIFACT
I will pick one quadrant. Write the press release we would publish in that world, dated three years from now, announcing what we built for it. Plain language, no marketing copy, no adjectives you cannot defend.
STAGE 5 — RISKS AND DISCONFIRMERS
What would have to be true for this to work?
What breaks if we are right and it succeeds?
What signal, if we saw it in the next six months, would tell us
this future is not the one arriving?
