DesignOps vs.
Design Management

By Hannah Baker

Dear Reader,

Last night's meetup explored the world of DesignOps vs. Design Management, featuring the insightful Maria Karnahova as our speaker.

Maria Karnahova is a seasoned senior DesignOps and is deeply passionate about design operations and facilitation. During the meetup, she provided valuable insights from her role at GetYourGuide.

Maria is also a co-founder of Lead by Design, a Berlin-based community for design professionals and their allies, with a dedicated focus on DesignOps, authentic leadership, and collaboration culture.

Highlights from Maria's Talk

"Day in the Life of a DesignOps"

Maria gave us a glimpse into her role's dynamic and multifaceted nature. Maria wears many hats daily, from addressing budget topics to navigating legal discussions about privacy, joining UX manager meetings, and organizing team events.

Her ability to seamlessly transition from managing licenses to creating team collages underscores the diversity and excitement that comes with DesignOps.

Creating a Fertile Environment

According to Maria, DesignOps is about creating the most fertile environment for UX teams.

It's not about micromanagement or control but instead amplifying the value and impact of the work produced by UX teams.

Maria emphasized that DesignOps professionals are not there to make life harder but to empower teams to focus on designing, researching, and creating.

Areas of Influence

Maria outlined three key areas of influence for DesignOps: impact & quality, efficiency & scalability, and motivation.

While UX is focused on solving problems for users, customers, and the business, DesignOps aims to solve the problems within UX itself.

The ultimate goal is to achieve impactful and high-quality outcomes, ensure efficiency and scalability, and maintain team motivation.

This overview only scratches the surface of Maria's insightful talk. If you're eager to delve deeper into DesignOps, we encourage you to check out the recording and slides from last night's meetup.

Level-up your critiques in 3 questions By Hannah Baker Dear Reader, You know the critique that starts with β€œquick feedback” and ends 45 minutes later with five conflicting opinions and no next step? Or the one where a senior voice speaks first and the room quietly aligns, even when the data points elsewhere. Here’s a simple pattern, adapted from Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), that pulls critiques out of taste debates and into clearer decisions. What VTS is (in 60 seconds) VTS is a...

What is design strategy?

The Summer Edition(and a Free Masterclass) by Jeff Humble Dear Reader, I'm taking some time off for summer, and I hope you are, too. When I'm off, I end up watching a lot of YouTube, so... A Free Masterclass on YouTube If you've ever wondered about design strategy, this masterclass has you covered. It's called "What is Design Strategy?" The toolbox of the design strategist is incredibly powerful, but it's not well documented. See what it looks like when the designer's sphere of influence...

A Workshop Agenda No One Wants By Hannah Baker Dear Reader, Last week, I posted a fake workshop agenda on LinkedIn. The kind we’ve all been in that drains your will to collaborate. I shared it as a joke. It reached 100,000+ people β€’ 800+ likes β€’ 100+ comments β€’ 20+ reposts But the comments weren’t just laughs. They were…grief. People didn’t just say β€œha ha, I’ve seen this.” They said: β€œOh no. I’ve run this.” The real takeaway? We’re not bad at facilitation, we have to break the status quo. We...
